She has worked on projects in the Baltic Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, all of them related to marine ecology. He is currently working at CTN in the Marine Pollution Management line carrying out projects related to noise pollution management and its impact on marine biodiversity.

Graduated in Telecommunication Systems Engineering at UPCT and student of a Master in Data Science at UOC. He is currently Data Science and AI Project Manager, participating in projects such as LIFEPortSounds (AIS data analysis), ECoSS (Deep Learning for underwater acoustic signals) and COMPOUND-AI (autonomous machine vision for the marine environment). He has worked in the development of AI tools, such as a simultaneous translator for the MARSEC scenario, and collaborates in the SAFEWAVE project with acoustic modeling and signal processing.

Responsible for Espacio Azul UPCT

Degree in Marine Sciences and PhD from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, with more than 20 years of experience in oceanic research. He has participated in many international projects always linked to the use of technologies such as numerical models or underwater robotics. Currently, he is responsible for Espacio Azul UPCT, an initiative created to promote projects related to sustainable blue economy in the UPCT. He is Principal Investigator of the Erasmus+ BlueDivet project to improve the skills of VET students in maritime and marine digitization. Passionate about dissemination as a means to raise awareness about the protection of the marine environment.

Francisco López Castejón has a degree in Marine Sciences and a doctorate from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, with more than 20 years of experience in ocean research. He has participated in a multitude of international projects always linked to the use of technologies such as numerical models or underwater robotics. Degree and PhD in Sciences, Chemistry Section (University of Murcia, 1977 and 1980, respectively). Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena. He has participated, and participates, in twenty-five research and technology transfer projects and contracts, both national and European. He has published more than ninety articles and book chapters, presented more than one hundred and ten communications in national and international conferences, registered three intellectual properties and two patents of invention, directed three doctoral theses and reviewed more than one hundred and forty articles for high impact scientific journals. He is an expert in physicochemical interactions in saline aqueous solutions, particularly those involved in sound propagation.

Investigates plankton dynamics from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Full Professor in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Cartagena (UPCT). Previously he was a Marie Curie Fellow at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, UK, and has dedicated more than 35 years to marine sciences through various international institutions and companies participating in more than 100 research projects. With a background in biological oceanography, he investigates plankton dynamics from an interdisciplinary perspective, encompassing physical (hydrodynamics), chemical (nutrient diffusion) and biological (plankton productivity) processes. He employs a wide range of techniques, from advanced laboratory methodologies, numerical simulation models and underwater robotics. His projects cover diverse spatial and temporal scales, including coastal lagoons such as the Mar Menor (SE Spain), the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Javier Gilabert is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical & Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Cartagena (UPCT), Spain, since 2001. Jean-Pierre Auclair

Specialized in the development of numerical models, implementing new techniques or adding new components to represent different physical phenomena.

He received his BS degree in physics with majors in mathematics and atmospheric sciences from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Subsequently, he completed a master's degree in oceanography, studying ocean wave growth, and a PhD in oceanography modeling the interactions between ocean waves and sea ice, both at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada. Through his studies and subsequent work, Jean-Pierre has specialized in the development of numerical models, implementing new techniques or adding new components to represent different physical phenomena. He works on the sound propagation model, oriented to the solution of multidimensional problems (convolutional networks and their variants).

JOSÉ LUIS SANCHO GÓMEZ

Coordinator of the Data Science and Engineering degree at UPCT and director of the Data Processing and Machine Learning (TDAM) research group.

José-Luis Sancho-Gómez received his BS degree in Physics from the University of La Laguna, Tenerife (Spain) in 1992, his MS degree in Telecommunication Engineering and Systems from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Madrid (Spain) in 1994 and his PhD degree in Telecommunication Engineering from the Carlos III University of Madrid, Madrid (Spain) in 1999. He is currently a Professor at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) in the Department of Information and Communication Technologies where he has been teaching and researching since 2003. He is the coordinator of the Data Science and Engineering degree at UPCT and leads the Data Processing and Machine Learning (TDAM) research group. His research activities are focused on signal and data processing with special attention to the development of automatic and deep learning techniques.

His research activity is developed in the framework of signal processing, and in particular in image processing (denoising, time-frequency processing, point matching, image registration, etc.), iterative regularization schemes (deformable models, active contours, variational regularization, etc.) and machine learning oriented to the solution of multidimensional problems (convolutional networks and their variants).

Juan Morales Sánchez is Full Professor at the Department of Information and Communication Technologies (Signal Theory and Communications) of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) since 2008. He is Telecommunications Engineer since 1992 by the University of Alcalá de Henares, and Telecommunications Engineer since 1996 by the Polytechnic University of Valencia. He has a PhD from the UPCT since 2005. He belongs to the Data Processing and Machine Learning (TDAM) group at UPCT.

Oleksandr Kovalyk Boroday is the research assistant in the development of the Life project and a PhD student at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena.

Originally from Ukraine, Oleksandr obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees in Telematics Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena.

At this university he discovered his vocation for research and decided to continue his studies with a PhD.

Oleksandr is passionate about technology and innovation, committed to making a positive impact on society.

Through his hard work, effort, dedication and continuous learning, and without fear of facing new challenges, he strives to contribute in a meaningful way to make his mark.

Oleksandr has experience in other innovative projects, including object detection and glaucoma diagnosis with the help of artificial intelligence, the latter being the subject of his doctoral research.

Gala Serrano was born in Elche (Spain) and received her Biology degree from the Universidad de Alicante (UA). She has a vast experience at sea: in fisheries management, cetacean research fieldwork and diving.

A PhD student-to-be, her research interests are Acoustics and Ecology of marine mammals, among others. In this project she’s gaining skills in experimental design and data analysis.

Ignacio Bosch Roig

Ignacio Bosch was born in Valencia (Spain) in 1975. He received the M.S. (2001) and his PhD degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the “Universitat Politècnica de València” (2005). He has been a lecturer in the UPV Communications Department since 2003 (currently director of the department). He is member of the UPV Institute of Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications. He has participated in 43 projects and 25 research contracts in various fields of work related to digital signal processing and responsible for the development of algorithms and systems for different ultrasonic, infrared, and biomedical signal processing techniques. As a result, he has published in several scientific journals and congresses: 32 articles in high impact journals (JCR), 13 in national and international prestigious journals, 59 in national and international specialized congresses. Participating in the elaboration of 5 patents. Having positively valued four Spanish research sections (Six-year period), including one of technological transference.

Jorge Gosalbez Castillo

Dr. Jorge Gosálbez was born in Valencia (Spain) in 1975. He received the Ingeniero de Telecomunicación and his Ph.D. from the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV) in 2000 and 2004, respectively. He has been a Full Professor at Departamento de Comunicaciones since 2021 (UPV) and a member of the Signal Processing Group of the Institute of Telecommunication and Multimedia Applications (I-TEAM) of UPV. 

His research concentrates on the statistical signal processing area, where he has worked on different theoretical and applied problems, many under contract with the industry. His theoretical aspects of interest are time-frequency analysis, signal detection, and array processing. Currently, he is involved in ultrasound signal processing for non-destructive evaluation of materials, in surveillance systems based on acoustic information, and in acoustic source location and tracking based on sensor and array signal processing. He has published more than 50 papers, including journals and conference contributions, and has been involved in more than 30 competitive research projects (6 EU) and more than 15 contracts with enterprises, most of them related to signal processing and non-destructive evaluation.

Miguel Ardid

Prof. Dr. Miguel Ardid obtained his MSc (1997) and PhD degree in Physics (2002) in the Universitat de València-Estudi General. He joined the Universitat Politècnica de València, Dept. of Applied Physics, as assistant professor in 2003 becoming Full Professor in 2017. He is lecturing mainly in Physics for Engineering courses, but also in Sensors and Instrumentation, and Acoustics. He is leading the research group “Acoustics and Astroparticle Detectors” that applies acoustic technologies for Astroparticle Physics and Observatories, with special emphasis in underwater neutrino telescopes.

He has been the main researcher in UPV of two European research projects related to KM3NeT, a deep-sea infrastructure in the Mediterranean Sea with a double objective: a neutrino telescope and a marine observatory. He is also the main researcher of several Spanish projects to contribute to the marine neutrino telescopes ANTARES and KM3NeT and/or dark matter detectors, such as PICO.

He is co-coordinating the dark matter working groups in both ANTARES and KM3NeT Collaborations. He has also been the calibration coordinator of KM3NeT during the Design Study, and was coordinator of the underwater acoustic positioning activities in ANTARES. He has published more than 150 SCI/JCR indexed research papers with more than 9000 citations.

He has been supervisor of 9 Ph. D. thesis and about 25 Final Degree and Master thesis. He is coordinating the PhD Program in Design, Manufacture and Management of Industrial Projects at UPV.

Rafael Verdú-Monedero es Profesor Titular de Universidad en la Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena (UPCT).

Obtuvo el título de Ingeniero de Telecomunicación por la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV) en el año 2000, y el título de doctor en el año 2005 por la UPCT. Sus intereses de investigación se centran en el procesado de señal y la formulación en el dominio de la frecuencia de problemas inversos de análisis de imagen, en concreto, modelos deformables, registro de imagen o estimación de la orientación. Prof. Dr. Ramón Miralles obtained his MSc (1995) and PhD degree in Telecommunications Engineering (2000) from the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). He has been a professor in the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación” (ETSIT-UPV) since 2017.

He does his research at the Institute of Telecommunication and Multimedia Applications (iTEAM), researching different Signal Processing and Artificial Intelligence applications, such as marine bioacoustics & passive acoustic monitoring of cetaceans.

He has been the principal researcher of 3 European research projects, 3 Spanish research projects, and 5 local research projects. He has also participated in more than 45 research projects and published more than 40 SCI/JCR-indexed research papers in theoretical & applied signal processing.

Víctor Espinosa Roselló has developed his teaching and research in the field of Hydroacoustics since 2002, being Full Professor on Underwater Acoustics at the Gandia Campus of the Polytechnical University of Valencia since 2017. His research interests have covered nonlinear acoustics problems in high intensity ultrasonic beams, applications in fisheries acoustics and the effect of underwater noise on marine ecosystems. He also coordinates the Mixed Research unit for the development of technological tools applied to marine research between the UPV and the Spanish Oceanographic Institute  (IEO-CSIC).

Victor Gallego is a biologist who has worked in a variety of fields, from physiology and endocrinology to ecological topics. In the first part of his research career, he focused on the study of the reproductive biology of endangered fish and tried to establish a cryobank for threatened aquatic species. Today, as a senior researcher, his work focuses on the study of aquatic ecology, ranging from freshwater to marine environments, and covering species from tiny fish such as samaruc (V. hispanica) to large cetaceans such as fin whales (B. physalis).
