The Port of Cartagena Launches Daily Underwater Noise Maps to Protect Cetaceans
Thanks to the European project LIFE PortSounds (LIFE20-ENV_ES_000387), the Port of Cartagena has started generating daily estimates of underwater noise caused by maritime traffic. This innovative tool will make it possible to precisely identify which areas around the port are most affected by ship noise and how it could impact marine species such as dolphins and whales that live in or pass through the region.

Europe and maritime industry join forces to reduce underwater noise
Experts from around the world met in Marseille to discuss solutions to mitigate underwater noise radiated by ships, a silent but devastating problem for marine wildlife. Initiatives such as the NAVISON project, Green Marine Europe certification and the innovative Blue Visby system stand out as key to transforming shipping towards a more sustainable and ecosystem-conscious model.

A Project to Reduce Underwater Noise in Cartagena
The LIFE Port Sounds project, funded by the European Union, seeks to minimize the impact of underwater noise generated by maritime traffic in the Port of Cartagena. Through monitoring, noise management and mitigation measures such as reducing the speed of ships, this initiative led by the Port Authority of Cartagena promotes sustainability and the protection of marine fauna.
